Specie List..... Derived is happy to announce the species that will be in our Aquarium
Species List |
The Philippine Coral Reef Tank focuses on the most diverse and fragile of marine ecosystems. From the main exhibit floor, visitors look down on a shallow, sandy lagoon—a calm, protected area inhabited by sharks, rays, and colorful fishes. Where the lagoon drops off to the deep reef, hundreds of bright fishes visible near the surface lure the visitor to view the spectacle one floor below. There, dramatic underwater views of the deep reef invite contemplation. Featuring 1,000 square feet of living coral and some 4,000 fish of 100 or more species, this 212,000-gallon exhibit is, at 25 feet, the deepest and one of the largest displays of a living coral reef in the world. Curiosity leads to exploration of several smaller galleries along the perimeter of the exhibit that highlight the unique adaptations and complex
interactions of reef organisms.

The Northern California Coast exhibit complements the California and Climate Change exhibit nearby. Visible from the main floor, a sandy flat and salt marsh remind us of the habitats, beauty, and services provided by San Francisco Bay. A level below, a floor-to-ceiling view into the 100,000-gallon California Coast tank reveals a magnificent rocky habitat modeled on the Farallon Islands just a few miles west of San Francisco. Additional exhibits illustrate the many habitats of our rocky coast and the adaptation of animals to their opportunities and challenges.

The heart of the Steinhart Aquarium, Water Planet focuses on the universality of water wherever there is life, investigating the adaptations by organisms to live in the myriad niches resulting from water’s many differences in chemistry, abundance or scarcity, temperature, and motion. Unlike the other Aquarium exhibits that are habitat oriented (Philippine Coral Reef, California Coast, Rainforests of the World), Water Planet focuses on water itself and captures a strong sense of liquid flow. Walls are milled expanses that integrate a complex array of tanks, graphics, monitors and projection into seamless, flowing surfaces.

We begin our journey on the forest floor of a magnificent Neotropical Rainforest that fills one half of the Rainforest Dome and rises 40 feet to its ceiling. Winding our way up the spiraling ramp, we visit, in succession, plants and animals of three distinct and imperiled rainforests: Borneo, Madagascar, and Costa Rica. Each of these three specific rainforest exhibits, through their height in relation to the Neotropical Rainforest, focuses on a particular rainforest level—in Borneo, the forest floor; Madagascar,
the mid-story; Costa Rica, the forest canopy. Departing from the canopy layer, we plunge (via elevator) back down through the Neotropical Rainforest to wonder at the below-surface view of the Flooded Forest of the Amazon.

African Hall, a central part of the new Tusher African Center, is both a dramatic recreation of exhibits beloved by generations of Academy visitors and a breath-taking new look at the biogeography and diversity of landscapes, plants, and animals of sub-Saharan Africa. The introduction of live animals adds even greater excitement and interpretive dimension to the exhibits. These live exhibits include African Penguins, Malawi Cichlids, White-throated Monitor Lizard, Jackson’s Chameleons, Plated Lizards and
Pancake Tortoises.

A returning favorite from the original Steinhart Aquarium, the Swamp contains an albino American alligator, several alligator snapping turtles and a variety of fish. Visitors can view the animals from the surface as well as get eye to eye with the animals from an underwater window. A tank of fearsomealligator gars, which look like alligators but are actually fish, faces the Swamp.
